NASA announced that Lisa Nowak will no longer be an astronaut effective March 8, 2007. Lisa was not the first woman to travel into space but she is the first lady astronaut that was arrested for attempted kidnapping earlier this year. This created a lot of buzz and some of Nowak’s pictures sold for thousands of dollars on eBay.
U.S. Navy Capt. Lisa Nowak’s detail as a NASA astronaut has been terminated, by mutual agreement between NASA and the U.S. Navy.
Nowak remains a member of the U.S. Navy. NASA said it requested an end to Nowak’s detail as an astronaut because it lacks the means to deal with the charges filed against Nowak. It also said that because Nowak is a Naval officer and not a civilian employee, she is not subject to any administrative action by NASA.
According to the Navy, Nowak has been assigned to the staff of the Chief of Naval Air Training at Corpus Cristi, Texas. Nowak is currently on leave and is scheduled to report on March 21.
